Santa Claus Unplugged
Well, you've got to admit that this Santa Claus thing and his musical
soundtrack that comes around every Christmas seems to really have legs.
I mean he and his annual world tour is still going strong here after
over 200 years! That's a longer run than Eric Clapton, David Bowie,
Cher, or even the Rolling Stones!
You have to wonder how a fat, jolly guy with a white beard in a red suit driving a sleigh pulled by 8 reindeer could cause such a stir and touch so many people. Yet he does...and he does it every year...touching one person at a time.
It seems that when you unplug Santa from all the commercial noise that garishly accompanies him, you see, feel, and hear a simple and profound message of hope, peace, and love. Not a bad gift to receive or give each year.
Being real and unplugged is difficult not only for Santa but also for
most people. Fear of non-acceptance drives many people to expensive,
designer clothes, plastic surgeons, publicists, and therapists. We live
in a society where people rush out to spend money they don't have on
things they don't need to impress people they don't know. Go figure.
My Holiday Tip for you is to be genuine and unplugged. Live and give honestly to your family and friends. Simply give them your precious time and heartfelt generosity. Be all that St. Nick, Sinter Klaas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, and Santa Claus truly symbolize when they are unplugged.
I am privileged to have had Santa give me my Christmas present early this year. In fact, not only was the present delivered early, but it also was one of the best I have ever received. I got a phone call from a radio, talk show host who had interviewed me at length a few nights earlier. She was crying when she shared with me that she had received a phone call from a man who wanted to thank her for having me on her show. He had lost hope and was contemplating suicide the night he happened to be listening to me talk. He was inspired and moved enough by my words to go out and buy my book, SHINE. After reading it, he found new hope and direction. He asked her to thank me for his new life.
That story alone gives meaning to my life and to my work. It also reminds me of what my friend and founder of Hard Rock Cafe and House of Blues, Isaac Tigrett, said to me when I started this new path of mine. "Larry," he smiled, "stay real and unplugged...The way to help the world is not by filling stadiums but by touching one person at a time."
Happy Holidays...Unplug yourself and touch one person...by plugging into their life.
See you on Life's Red Carpet!
